It's been said that major burns caused by fire, scalds, friction and chemical or electrical contact are 'the greatest insult inflicted on the human body.' As emergency first-responders, firefighters are all too aware of the devastating physical and psychological effects of serious burns. Turning their deep concern into dynamic action, Manitoba's firefighters established North America's first Fire Fighters Burn Fund, a volunteer-run charitable organization that raises money from public and private sources to purchase specialized medical equipment, fund advanced research, train burn care teams, support occupational therapy programs, plan annual camps and retreats for children and adults with burn injuries, finance burn survivor conferences and produce a variety of fire safety and burn prevention materials. The Fire Fighters Burn Fund is operated by volunteers, no salaries are paid and every dollar raised in Manitoba is spent here. It is actively supported by all the paid and most of the volunteer fire departments in the province. |
